Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
