Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
