RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
